The Sofelco Logo Design Process:

The initial logo used by Sofelco Rollforming:

When people from Sofelco Enterprises LTD. contacted me regarding a website design, they brought a brochure with the logo they had made themselves. They realized that the logo they had designed was not perfect and also hired me to design a logo for the Sofelco Rollforming division of the company. This is the origional logo they presented me with.

Researching:

I researched many different rollforming companies to make sure that what I created was not similar. I also needed to get a feel for the industry itself. This took several hours to complete.

I also had to create a unique logo. Read more on qualities of a good logo here. Sofelco Enterprise specified that they wanted some icon or image that would represent rollforming. Their first attempt at a logo had a sheet of tin which they said I could use if I had to.

Referencing:

I discovered that many logos had sharp edges of rounded edges. Several logos had their name written as if it had been bent by a machine. I felt that these methods were not versatile enough and I wanted the name to create the edginess associated with rollforming.

Here is what I wanted the logo to show:

  • The edge or sharpness of metal
  • The transformation process (since the sheet metal formed into shape)
  • Showing motion (since the whole process takes place)

Sketching:

When I had completed my research on competitive rollforming companies, I discovered that this was an area lacking professional logo design. I created a mind map to focus on the major parts of rollforming.

More Sketching...

I had many ideas on paper and so I tried many of them on the computer. I still didn't feel that I had a successful logo yet. I went back to the drawing board and then finally I came up with the idea below. I immediately knew this was the one to go with.

Final logo compared to black and white:

I prepared the logos below and sent them to Sofelco Rollforming manager to review. I also gave him the variations below because you can see the logo is still effective even if simple black and white or negative space usage. He replied, "I like it". and I knew that was the one.

Colours:

Based on the initial brief, I made some educated guess as to the colours they would like. However, I sent them more options to choose from. They still preferred the original.

Another logo I liked:

I also sent him a variation of the logo, which I also liked. They decided to stay with the original I had sent.

I present the final logo...
